Abstract

Given that the car is the most common means of transport, road accidents are the main cause of death. The three factors in driving are the driver, the vehicle and the infrastructure. Algeria is classified as a country with a high number of accidents. Statistics from the Algerian National Centre for Accident Prevention and Road Safety show that the direct causes of traffic accidents are related to human beings, vehicles and the environment. Human behaviour is seen in speeding, followed by alcohol consumption and disregard for the highway code. In conclusion, we propose measures to help reduce the number of accidents through the adoption and enforcement of laws, taking into account risk factors, awareness-raising campaigns and prevention of the social categories concerned by road mortality, launched through the mass media, the reduction of the use of individual vehicles and encouragement of common transport by contributing to the preservation of human health and fight against onset of cardiovascular diseases.
